Protein fluctuations explored by inelastic neutron scattering

Inbunden, 2018. Skickas inom 7-10 vardagar. Köp Spin-Wave Theory and its Applications to Neutron Scattering and THz Spectroscopy av Randy S Fishman, Jaime … Neutron scattering spectroscopies offer unique capabilities that are difficult or impossible to match by other techniques. The current study presents the development of a compact and portable instrumental design that enables the in situ investigation of catalytic samples by neutron scattering techniques. Small angle scattering (SAS) is the collective name given to the techniques of small angle neutron (SANS), X-ray (SAXS) and light (SALS, or just LS) scattering. In each of these techniques radiation is elastically scattered by a sample and the resulting scattering pattern is analysed to provide information about the size, shape and orientation of some component of the sample.

Neutron scattering spectroscopy is not as widely used as X-ray spectroscopy, but Ashkar sees the two as complementary techniques. Although X-rays are useful, they are energetic and can easily cause radiation damage to polymers. Neutrons, on the other hand, are benign. CNCS is a high-resolution, direct-geometry, multi-chopper inelastic spectrometer designed to provide flexibility in the choice of energy resolution and to perform best at low incident energies (2 to 50 meV).

Neutron scattering spectroscopy

Vibrational spectroscopy is a commonly used tool for the study of catalysts. The neutron is a particle with zero charge which means that it is highly penetrating and is not a surface-sensitive probe.

Spin Echo Spectroscopy (NSE) uses the velocity change of the neutrons to infer the energy transfer – to achieve a higher resolution than with conventional time-of-flight-methods, the neutron spin directions are used as a kind of individual stop watches.Conventional neutron spectroscopic methods (3-axis, TOF, back-scattering) define the incident energy Ei and final neutron energy Ef separately. The techniques of quasi-elastic and inelastic neutron scattering (QENS and INS) are applied to investigate the oligomerization of propene over a ZSM-5 zeolite.

Neutron spectroscopy (inelastic scattering) measures dynamics. The measured intensity yields S(Q,E). Scattering with nonzero E, e.g. to study vibrational excitations, is called inelastic scattering.

The goal is to derive an expression for the quantities measured by neutron spectroscopy (the dynamic structure factor, S(Q,E), or the intermediate scattering function, I(Q,t)) in terms of macroscopic and/or microscopic quantities. For simplicity and didactical purposes, let’sconsider Brownian dynamics.

-- Neutron scattering lengths vary "wildly" with atomic number and are independent of momentum transfer Q. This is used to advantage in deuterium labeling using the fact that the scattering lengths for hydrogen and deuterium are widely different Awarded for “pioneering contributions to the development of neutron scattering techniques for studies of condensed matter” Nobel Prize in Physics, 1994 Bertram N. Brockhouse Clifford G. Shull Development of neutron spectroscopy Development of the neutron diffraction technique Neutron spectroscopy. Neutron spectroscopy takes advantage of inelastic scattering. "With inelastic neutron scattering, the neutron loses or gains some energy by its interaction with the material," said Mark Lumsden, leader of ORNL's Neutron Spectroscopy Group. 1. CHARACTERISTICS OF NEUTRON SCATTERING A few advantages of neutron scattering are included here. -- Neutron scattering lengths vary "wildly" with atomic number and are independent of momentum transfer Q. This is used to advantage in deuterium labeling using the fact that the scattering lengths for hydrogen and deuterium are widely different Inelastic neutron scattering measures the change in the energy of the neutron as it scatters from a sample. This can be used to probe a wide variety of different physical phenomenon: diffusional or hopping motions of atoms, the rotational modes of molecules, sound modes and molecular vibrations, recoil in quantum fluids, magnetic and quantum excitations or even electronic transitions.
